KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will allocate RM200 million to enhance internet facilities and connectivity at all educational institutions under Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara). Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the allocation aims to resolve internet connectivity issues faced by Mara institutions.

Fahmi added that initially, MCMC wanted to allocate RM150 million, but he requested an additional RM50 million to be provided to Mara.

"But I feel it's not enough.

I have a niece studying at UiTM Dengkil, and when I visited the campus, I saw that every room had its own Wi-Fi router.

"This is a good standard and could be a model to follow and implement in many other places.

"So I'm requesting an additional RM50 million, bringing the total to RM200 million," Fahmi said in his speech during the 2025 Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia Amazing Syawal event.

During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked between MCMC and Mara to improve the internet connectivity at all Mara education institutions.

The ceremony was witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Fahmi, Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang, Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and MCMC executive chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh.

The cooperation would involve Maktab Rendah Sains Mara, Institut Kemahiran Mara, Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara, Mara-Japan Industrial Institute, Kolej Poly-Tech Mara, Kolej Profesional Mara, Kolej Mara, Universiti Kuala Lumpur, German-Malaysia Institute and GiatMara.

The initiative will facilitate learning and enable students to make use of internet access for their daily needs.

The MoU also involved the Safe Internet campaign to develop awareness among students and staff..
